Velella Velella
It is rare to see these colorful, delicate creatures up close, and this was a lucky encounter on a beach south of Carmel, California. Velella Velella are free-floating hydrozoan that live on the surface of the open ocean, and are actually a colony of Cnidarian polyps. The wind had blown these Velella Velella ashore, and I did not hesitate to lay down in the sand with my camera for a closer look.
